In Bordeaux, the 1970s got off to a flying start with an extraordinary vintage: 1970. For a long time, the 1971 vintage was outclassed and thought to be of better quality than the 1970 vintage. The 1971 vintage produced excellent Saint-Emilion and Pomerol. The sweet wines are splendid, rich, and perfectly concentrated. The dry whites are the most successful with an average of 19/20.
In Burgundy, the 1971 vintage is a very great vintage. The whites being somewhat better than the reds, they are fine, elegant and generous. The reds are full-bodied and harmonious.
The 1971 vintage is one of the exceptional vintages for the whole of the French vineyard.
