The French vineyard was not spared by the disastrous weather conditions of 1974. No region was really able to make the most of it.
In Bordeaux, the harvest was punctuated by the violent rains that fell on the vineyard in September. As a result, the harvests were mediocre and consisted mainly of waterlogged grapes. Nevertheless, the Pessac-Léognan region saw some very good successes, especially the Mission Haut-Brion 1974. We can mention the Château Latour 1974 in Pauillac and the Château Trotanoy 1974 in Pomerol.
In Burgundy, a vintage of good quality overall despite difficult weather conditions. Thanks to a dry and sunny spring the grapes were able to reach a suitable maturity but the Burgundy vineyard suffered from strong irregularities in the flowering and thus irregularities in the quality of the wines.
The wines of the Rhône are better in the South than in the North. The vintage is still very average, but the most selective producers have been very successful in their harvests. Thus, Cornas 1974, Hermitage 1974 or Côte-Rôtie 1974 are superb.
