Bottle of Wine from 1979: the tasters' notes on the 1979 vintage

The year 1979 was not a very great vintage for the French wines but some vineyards distinguished themselves, in particular that of the Vallée du Rhône. Discover the scores out of 20 and the reviews of the greatest tasters on the wines from 1979.

- Bordeaux wines in 1979 : 14,5/20

1979 is a great vintage in Bordeaux for red wines, and it is in Pomerol, in Saint Émilion, in Margaux and in Pessac-Léognan that the 1979 vintage was particularly successful. The Château Lafleur in Pomerol is one of the greatest wines of this vintage and can still be kept until 2030. In 1979, we find other successes such as Haut Brion in Pessac Léognan, the Chateau Margaux in Margaux.

On the other hand, 1979 is not a great vintage for white wines in Bordeaux. However, the most prestigious chateaux in Sauternes such as Chateau d'Yquem, Château Gillette or Château Suduiraut have kept their status of Premier Cru and still offer very nice tastings nowadays. Concerning the 1979 Bordeaux dry white wines, Domaine de Chevalier Blanc is the reference for this vintage.

- Burgundy wines in 1979 : 15/20

1979 is a good vintage for Burgundy red wines, which has favoured the most complete and often the most expensive appellations such as the Grands Crus and Premiers Crus d'Echezeaux, Romanée, Musigny, Chambertin and Pommard. The producers who stood out in 1979 are : La Romanée Conti, Joseph Drouhin, Jacques Prieurs, Armand Rousseau, ou encore Louis Jadot.

1979 is a good vintage for the white wines of Burgundy with very good references in the most mythical appellations. In Chablis, Domaine Raveneau has notably produced a superb Grand Cru Clos in 1979; the Corton Charlemagne 1979 of Domaine Rapet is also a reference of the 1979 vintage, as are Les Pucelles of Domaine Leflaive in 1er Cru of Puligny Montrachet 1979.

- The wines of the Rhône in 1979: 16/20

1979 was an interesting year in the Vallée du Rhône, giving great wines for laying down, notably in Côte Rôtie with La Landonne 1979 of Guigal which is reaching maturity now and for a few more years. The Chateauneuf du Pape 1979 are also great successes with references such as Rayas, Château de Beaucastel or Clos des papes.
