The year 1981 was a rather difficult year in France and did not have weather conditions beneficial to the production of Great Wines.

Wines of 1981 in Bordeaux

In Bordeaux, the year 1981 gave birth to wines of good quality but the heavy rains that fell on the vineyards just before the harvest reduced the intensity of the aromas of the grapes. The Graves are richer and deeper than the wines of the Médoc. The Pomerol and Saint-Emilion wines are doing very well and offer finesse, elegance and aromatic richness in tasting.

The 1981 wines in Burgundy

Burgundy was no luckier than Bordeaux in 1981. Frost in April and hail showers in July did not favour the harvest. In fact, yields were relatively low (no more than 50-60% of the harvest). The wines are not made for great ageing. Nevertheless, some producers stood out in 1981 such as Gevrey Chambertin 1981-Moillard for example. The vintage is not exceptional in Burgundy, but some estates offer fine wines.
