Choosing a 1989 wine: the experts' notes

According to the experts, 1989 was an excellent year all over France and the great wines produced in this vintage have been cut for laying down. It is therefore quite possible to offer or afford superb tastings of 1989 wines without ruining yourself since prices vary greatly depending on the region and the prestige of the estates. You will find below a rating of the 1989 vintage in the different regions of France as well as the most beautiful bottles of this exceptional vintage.

 

The 1989 vintage is unique in Bordeaux, especially the Pomerol and Saint Emilion which are among the very fine successes of the 1989 vintage. In addition, there are historic bottles such as the 1989 Haut-Brion in Pessac Léognan, the Château Margaux 1989 in Margaux. This vintage also marks the powerful comeback of several châteaux: Château Angelus 1989 in Saint Emilion, Château Montrose 1989 in St. Estéphe, Château Lynch Bages 1989 and Château Pichon Baron 1989 in Pauillac. Depending on the prestige and quality of the estates, the prices of 1989 Bordeaux wines can vary from 60€ to several thousand euros per bottle (Petrus 1989).

 

1989 is an excellent vintage in Burgundy which favoured the most complete appellations; for example it is better to favour the Pommard 1989 rather than Volnay or Beaune. And Nuits-Saint-Georges and Vosne-Romanée rather than Chambolle-Musigny. The rarity of 1989 Burgundy wines means that prices are often higher than in other regions. It costs between 100€ and several thousand euros to buy a bottle of 1989 Burgundy.

 

1989 was an admirable year in the Vallée du Rhône, giving great wines for laying down in all the beautiful appellations. The Côte Rôtie 1989 and the Châteauneuf du Pape 1989 are magnificent and powerful. Thus, Château de Beaucastel 1989 or La Mouline 1989 at Guigal in Côte-Rôtie are all mythical 1989 bottles sought after by wine enthusiasts.
