Our opinion on the 2003 vintage

Europe suffered a brutal heat wave and drought that dramatically reduced crop size. For normally cool regions, such as parts of northern France, this was largely good news, as the grapes ripened more easily than usual and the wines can be exceptionally opulent.

But winemakers in warmer regions often had to contend with sunburned grapes, as well as abnormally high sugar levels that could result in overly alcoholic or otherwise unbalanced wines. Those who have managed to overcome these challenges say they have produced very concentrated wines. There will be few sweet wines due to the lack of botrytis in the dry conditions, although the Sauternes châteaux reported excellent quality.

  

Bordeaux, hot but successful!

The 2003 vintage in Bordeaux was very good despite extremely hot weather conditions. The year saw unprecedented heat, which created an extraordinary vintage to divide critics and produce great wines alike. The growing season was intensely hot and dry and temperatures remained high throughout the nights and days. On some days, record temperatures of 86 degrees Fahrenheit were recorded, and on one occasion the temperature even approached 120 degrees. In some cases, the vines suffered so much from the drought and heat stress that they stopped growing. These conditions were extremely divisive: they worked well for some regions and estates, but not so well for others.

 

Burgundy, the reds as a bonus

2003 was an incredibly hot year, and a difficult vintage for Burgundy. The 2003 vintage in Burgundy is low in quantity, the product of an excessively hot summer after a savage frost attack in April. It was harvested almost a month earlier than usual. From Chablis to Pouilly-Fuissé, 2003 was disappointing for the white wines: they were heavy and lacked the normal acidity, and in many cases too obviously acidified. But the red wines from Pinot Noir are good, if not classic; and the Beaujolais is splendid.
