Established in 1788, in New South Wales, the vine spread in the 19th century in many parts of the country, but the vineyard remains concentrated in the south-east and extreme south, sunny but relatively cool regions.

In 2005, Australian viticulture was the fourth largest exporter with a growth of 80% over the last five years. Australians seem to have assimilated the rules of marketing better than anyone else. Their export wines, 80% of which are produced by four major wineries, are mainly blends from the various production regions.
