Beaujolais is a French wine of appellation d'origine contrôlée produced in the north of the department of Rhône and a few communes in Saône-et-Loire.
The appellation covers the entire Beaujolais vineyard and offers six different products:
It is made almost exclusively from the Gamay grape variety for red wines and Chardonnay for white wines (the latter only represents 3% of total production).
The 10 Beaujolais crus (brouilly, chénas, chiroubles, côte-de-brouilly, fleurie, juliénas, morgon, moulin-à-vent, régnié and saint-amour) are not part of the Beaujolais appellation but are ten different appellations which are stricter in terms of production and vinification.
Beaujolais was the first wine to launch the "fashion" of the primeur. The Beaujolais Primeur or Nouveau corresponds to the wine of the same year. It is marketed on the 3rd Thursday of November since 1985. From 1951, the release of the new Beaujolais became an important and celebrated event.
