The Château Bélair (Bélair-Monange), is a 12.5 hectare wine-growing estate located in the Gironde. In AOC Saint-Émilion, it is classified Premier Grand Cru Classé B in the latest rankings of the 2006 Saint-Emilion wines.
What are the specificities of Château Belair?
Became known as Château Bélair and later Château Bélair-Monange, the estate was created by Robert de Knolles in the late 1300s.
Like many Bordeaux properties, the vineyard was confiscated during the French Revolution. The Canolle family was able to recover their Saint-Emilion estate in 1802. To celebrate this achievement, they bottled and sold their wine, becoming perhaps the first estate in Saint Emilion to bottle their own wine. They remained the owners of the Château Bélair until 1916.
Bélair-Monange was chosen by Christian Moueix in memory of Anne-Adèle Monange, his grandmother, who was the first woman of the Moueix family to settle in the village of Saint Emilion.
2008 was the first vintage where the Moueix family took full responsibility for the vineyard, winemaking and marketing.
The Château Bélair Monange has expanded his vineyard (23.5 hectares) following the 2012 Saint Emilion Classification. At that time, the Château Magdelaine is officially merged with Bélair-Monange, creating a larger estate.
Today, Edouard Moueix is in charge of Bélair-Monange. Under the direction of Edouard Moueix and Christian Moueix, the wines have improved significantly. A visible improvement thanks to a more rigorous selection in the vineyard and a reduction in yields. They have also started harvesting later in order to harvest riper fruits.
The Château Bélair-Monange offers for tasting a blended wine composed of 2 grape varieties:
Bélair-Monange is now much fleshier, richer and more concentrated than it was under the previous owners. From 2004 onwards, the vintages are gaining in density. A vineyard replanting plan has also recently been put in place. The stakes are high because the cru has a magnificent terroir.
The vines, which are on average 40 years old, produce 18,000 bottles each year.
