History: The company, originally known as Renaudin-Bollinger & Cie, was founded in 1829. Since then, the company has remained in the Bollinger family until 2008, when for the first time in its history, the president came from outside the family. Bollinger Champagne is still an independent property.
Location and terroir : Bollinger is located in Aÿ, in the heart of the Champagne region, and the majority of the vines are located on plots of premier cru and grand cru. The style of the house is centered on pinot noir and chardonnay, the pinot meunier being used to improve rather than dominate. Pinot noir represents no less than 60% of the entire Bollinger collection and no Blanc de Blanc is included in the Champagne range.
Two thirds of the grapes are grown on the estate, the rest coming from producers with a long history with the house. All the plots are vinified separately to allow each terroir to express itself fully.
The style of the estate: Bollinger has a wide range of barrels dating from 1903, most of which were purchased from a French négociant, 3 years old, and maintained by a cooper until the age of 30. This allows for a roundness of style and an integrated flavour typical of Bollinger. The house also has an extensive portfolio of reserve wines which are kept under cork rather than the more traditional cap. This takes both time and money, with stirring and disgorging by hand, which is why the majority of champagne houses do not follow this practice.
The Bollinger collection includes non-vintage brut and rosé champagnes, La Grande Année Brut and Rosé, as well as prestige cuvees, RD, Vielles Vignes Françaises and La Côte aux Enfants. RD (meaning recently disgorged) is Mrs. Bollinger's invention in the middle of the 20th century, a major innovation of the time. This cuvée is kept on its lees much longer than any other wine in the range. Disgorging the bottle just before it is released - hence the "recently disgorged" - makes it possible to combine freshness and age.
Bollinger and cinema: In recent years, Bollinger RD has been a James Bond favourite in the films "License to Kill", "Skyfall" and "Spectre", underlining a historic relationship between the two brands that began on paper in the 1956 novel, Diamonds are Forever.
The company's charter stipulates that 70% of the grapes must always come from the company's own vineyards, setting the standards of excellence that are synonymous with the Bollinger name. Bollinger's champagnes are still rich and distinctive, excellent ambassadors for a house that continues to build its reputation on classic and complex champagnes with the ability to age gracefully.
