The estate
Château Branaire-Ducru is ranked 4th Grand Cru Classé in the AOC St Julien in the Bordeaux classification of 1855. It is located in Saint-Julien-Beychevelle and produces 300,000 bottles per year.
The property changed hands during the 1988 harvest. The Sucrerie de Toury, the new owner, called on Philippe Dhaluin as the steward, who has since moved on to manage Château Mouton-Rothschild. Château Branaire-Ducru is located on the other side of the road from Château Beychevelle, in the south of the St-Julien appellation. Since 1988, the estate has invested heavily in new plantings as well as in the installation of a new ultra-modern vat room and cellar.
The estate's great wine
The 60 hectares of vines at Branaire-Ducru are planted with Cabernet Sauvignon (70%), Merlot (22%), Cabernet Franc (5%) and Petit Verdot (3%). The wines are aged in oak barrels (65% new). The proportion of Cabernet Sauvignon in the blend is even higher than in the vineyards - 80-85% in most years, which is one of the highest in the Médoc. Branaire-Ducru produces a pure and classic St-Julien, elegant, ripe, supple and well balanced.
