What is Domaine Bruno Clair?

Bruno is the grandson of Joseph Clair, a native of Santenay, who fell in love with a daughter of Marsannay, Marguerite Daü, while he was in Dijon during the First World War. When Bruno was ready to start his life as a winegrower, he had family problems. So he started by creating his own vineyards, replanting in Marsannay and reclaiming wasteland at the top of the slope in Morey-St-Denis . However, in the mid-1980s, the estate - less vines given by a family member to Louis Jadot - was reconstituted with Bruno in charge. He quickly recruited a former colleague, Philippe Brun, into the cellar and the couple have now developed the estate to its current size of 24 hectares and 24 different wines, made possible when certain contracts with Maison Louis Jadot (Vosne-Romanée, Gevrey-Chambertin-Clos St-Jacques and Chambertin-Clos de Bèze) and Fourgeray de Beauclair (Bonnes Mares) ended in 2006.

Grapes are rigorously sorted in the vineyard and de-stemmed, although some stems were retained in 2005. The wines are powerful but don't seem too extracted, even though Philippe Brun is a fervent defender of punching, but happy to modify his techniques.

The great vintages of Bruno Clair

Chambertin-Clos de Bèzes Grand Cru : Two thirds of the vines date back to 1912 and the rest were planted in 1972. It is an exceptional wine, even by the standards of this great vineyard, which will pay back a significant aging. Clair's plots are in the middle of the vineyard, the rows extending from top to bottom.

Bonnes Mares Grand Cru: This farm, located on the "terres blanches" in the Bonnes Mares area of Morey-St-Denis, returned from a long-term lease to Domaine Fougeray de Beauclair in 2006, and there will be more to come. The beautifully mature vines were planted in 1946 and 1980. It is however too early to define the character of a Bruno Clair Bonnes Mares.

Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Cazetiers: Its style is very different from that of the neighbouring Clos St-Jacques, even though most of the vines were planted at the same time with the same plant material - but there is one big difference: Bruno Clair's Cazetiers company is at the top of the list. The slope is white, while the rows of the Clos St-Jacques go from top to bottom. Although the elevation is reflected in the wine's unquestionable minerality, this cuvée tends to be relatively low in acidity. Exceptionally elegant, however.

Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Clos St-Jacques: It was planted in 1957 and 1972. It is only since 1999 that the wine has been sold from Domaine Bruno Clair - previously it was under his mother's name, Domaine G Bartet, but with the same style of label. Despite the immediately sumptuous richness of red and black fruits, this wine has the power to develop with age with much greater fullness than the Cazetiers.

Savigny-lès-Beaune 1er Cru La Dominode: The vineyard dates from 1902, although the vines have been replaced by individuals who did not survive. It is remarkably styled for Savigny and almost seems to possess the refinement of a Côte de Nuits.

Marsannay Longeroies: While the Marsannay Grasses Têtes de Clair are full-bodied and quite tannic and its Vaudenelles are subtle and elegant, perhaps the most complete of the three single-vineyard bottlings is Les Longeroies, made mainly from vines aged 70 years and over, which combine power and finesse. Good vintages will keep very well.

Morey-St-Denis Blanc "Rue de Vergy": Planted from scratch with Chardonnay in 1981 in a garigue above Bonnes Mares, practically without vegetable matter. The vines seem to grow straight out of the rock. A refreshing, balanced white wine with good acidity.
