Puligny-Montrachet 1er cru Les Combettes 2014 - Jacques Prieur
Great Burgundy wine
(90 - 92)/100 Parker
Cellaring : 2017 - 2027
By Neal Martin in 2015: 'The 2014 Puligny Montrachet 1er Cru les Combettes, one of the first to be harvested, has a light, chalky bouquet that opens up nicely in the glass. The palate is more where the action is, with delicate touches of peach, orange zest and dried honey; it's quite heavy towards the finish which needs to show just a little more precision. That said, there's plenty of flavour in this Puligny."
Vintage 2014: "Under the influence of a mild, wet winter and a warm, dry spring, the vine's vegetative cycle resumed its activity very early, from the end of March, and 2014 is at this time among the earliest of the last 20 years. However, we must not forget the violent hail storm of Saturday 28 June which destroyed the heart of the Côte de Beaune and the optimism of the Burgundy winegrowing world about the very good potential of the 2014 vintage. From that date onwards, the weather conditions in July and August were particularly disturbed, with a lot of humidity and cool temperatures (mainly in August)... and miracle!!! From September 1st, the long awaited summer finally arrived and thanks to dry, warm and sunny weather, most of the grapes reached the desired maturity. The Pinot Noir grapes required a great deal of vigilance as to the date of harvest and required a very rigorous sorting. As for the Chardonnay grapes, patience paid off and they were harvested with a perfect balance of ripeness and excellent sanitary condition. The first impressions that emerge from the wines are fruit and finesse for the reds and aromatic richness, freshness and energy for the whites.
GRAPE VARIETY & AREA
Grape variety: 100% Chardonnay on a plot of 1.50 hectares.
TERROIR
Beautiful vineyard in the heart of the Grands Terroirs de Chardonnay de la Côte de Beaune. Facing south-east, it dominates the hillside of the village of Puligny-Montrachet.
Clay-limestone soil with a strong presence of pebbles favouring a strong maturity.
VINIFICATION & MATURATION
The grapes are harvested by hand in small crates, then the whole bunches are pressed in a pneumatic press. The juice is settled after pressing for 12 to 14 hours. Alcoholic fermentation and maturation are carried out 100% in oak barrels. Malolactic fermentation is carried out at 100%.
Ageing period: 19 months.
