Château Calon Ségur 1996 in Double Magnum
Saint-Estèphe - 3rd Grand Cru Rated
91/100 Parker
Tasting notes by Neal Martin: “Tasted at the château, the 1996 Calon Segur is a blend of 65% Cabernet Sauvignon, 7% Cabernet Franc, 25% Merlot and 3% Petit Verdot. This wine was always highly appreciated in its youth by Robert Parker and myself. Today, at 20 years of age, it shows a beautiful delineation on the nose, with more detail than the 1986 tasted alongside. The oak is a little more present here (50% in this vintage), combined with many aromas of redcurrant, cedar, earth and undergrowth. These aromas can still develop. The palate is quite full-bodied with tight tannins on the entry, perhaps one of the youngest and most backward 1996s I've tasted during my visits. Firm on the palate, masculine, very Saint-Estèphe. To criticize this wine, I'd say the oak isn't quite linked to the fruit as it should be after two decades (which was corrected today). It's a pleasant Calon-Segur, but doesn't quite meet my admittedly high expectations. Tasted in July 2016.”
