The Château Canon La Gaffelière has long been considered the vassal of La Gaffelière, at the foot of which it settled and from which it borrowed part of its name, this vineyard has now made a reputation for itself without fail. The château Canon-la-Gaffelière belonged to Count Von Neipperg and was one of the first grands crus classé B in Saint Emilion on the 1855 classification of Bordeaux wines. Situated in the centre of the Saint-Emilion appellation, south of the town, the property has a climate similar to that of Pomerol: more continental than the Médoc maritime, with generally more rainfall in spring, although less in summer and winter. The 19.5 hectares of vineyards of Canon-la-Gaffelière (Merlot 55%, Cabernet Franc 40%, Cabernet Sauvignon 5%) are located at the base of the Côtes, on a relatively flat soil of sandy-gravelly gravel and sandy-clay subsoil. The vinification at Canon-la-Gaffelière is traditional: up to 4 weeks in temperature-controlled wooden vats, followed by a maturation period of up to 18 months in oak barrels, 50% of which are new.
The Château Canon La Gaffelière creates an elegant wine with aromas of flowers, earth, fresh fruit, truffle and stone. The wine at its best is silky, rich and pure with the ability to age and evolve.
Château Canon La Gaffelière is much better with at least 10-15 years of ageing in good vintages. Younger vintages can be decanted for 2-3 hours or more. This allows the wine to soften and open up its fragrance. Older vintages may require very little decanting, just enough to remove sediment. The Château Canon La Gaffelière offers the best drink and should reach its maximum maturity between 10 and 30 years after the vintage.
