This is one of our partner estates, which means that their wines are shipped directly to our cellar following their bottling at their estate. Presentation of La Cave de Tain : Great Rhône wine

La Cave de Tain : Exceptional quality in Tain l'Hermitage. In 1980, the Cave de Tain had 600 members; the number has since been halved.

Director Xavier Gomart admits that it is difficult to retain ambitious young people, while the lazy ones drift away because they don't like the rigorous standards that the Cave de Tain imposes on its members.  This is precisely what should allow this exceptional cooperative to continue to be a landmark of the Northern Rhône for generations to come.  But there are also other assets...

The cooperative's owner: The founding president of the Cave de Tain, Louis Gambert de Loche, was a landowner in Hermitage who agreed to sell his 6 ha farm to the cooperative when he retired.  The cooperative then bought a further 16 ha of Hermitage in the 1960s, at a time when land values were much lower than today; this total of 22 ha includes 4 ha of white vines.  Members contribute a further 8 ha of Hermitage vines - the Cave de Tain therefore controls 30 ha (22%) of the largest vineyard in the Rhône.  It also owns some land in Crozes-Hermitage, Cornas and St Péray.

In Cornas, where the price of land is prohibitive for any young grower who is not lucky enough to inherit it, the Cave de Tain was recently able to install four young growers on lease.  It has done the same thing in St Peray.  These "state-owned" farms give the cooperative both a chance to compete at the highest quality levels and a financial stability that few others have.  The members of the cooperative represent, of course, the main landholdings - some 950 ha in production this year, including about 40% of all Crozes-Hermitage.
