When to drink this wine? Can be drunk now. A great vintage of mature champagne.
Tasted by David Schildknecht in 2013: "From vines planted in 1962, the single-vineyard Jacquesson 2004 Extra Brut Avize Champ Cain has a quite remarkable nose. A hothouse-like profusion of leaves and flowers emerge on the sea breeze, with jasmine, musky narcissus, pungent spices like those of an exotic orchid, iodine-tinged grilled shrimp shells and toasted cereal all pungently present and anticipating the elusive complexity delivered on a caressing, polished, yet extremely refreshing and almost ethereal palate. Over time, the creaminess and refinement of the bubbles became more evident, along with a contrasting impression of increased spiciness, suggesting hops and lentil sprouts, all in the context of a remarkable balance and transparency of nuance. The finish is endlessly fascinating and remains infectiously juicy with a subtle but appetising salinity. The lucky owners should plan to follow the bottles for at least a decade."
South-facing hillside; chalky clay-sand-loam soil with chalk gravel on Campanian; 12,000 Chardonnay vines planted on 1.5 hectares in 1962; chablis pruning.
