Opinion: "Very pretty indeed, with lovely aromas of cherries, berries and flowers. Rather full-bodied, with fine tannins and an aftertaste of berries and cherries. Delicious." James Suckling
How to serve Chasse Spleen ?
In terms of serving, we recommend decanting the wine before tasting, due to its age. This aerates the wine and gives it the opportunity to express itself fully. Decanting for one to two hours should suffice.
When to drink this 1998 wine
Château Chasse-Spleen 1998 is a wine that has reached a certain level of maturity, giving it a certain aromatic complexity and harmony. It can be enjoyed now, but also has further aging potential.
Our verdict:
- When tasted, Château Chasse-Spleen 1998 has a deep, intense red color.
- On the nose, it reveals complex, subtle aromas of ripe black fruit, such as black cherry, blackberry and blackcurrant. Notes of tobacco, cedar and licorice may also be present, reflecting the aging in oak barrels.
- On the palate, this wine is characterized by its firm, balanced structure. Tannins are silky and well-integrated, offering a pleasant texture. The black fruits detected on the nose are echoed, along with hints of vanilla and spice.
- The finish is long and persistent, leaving an impression of refinement and finesse.
TERROIR AND GRAPE VARIETIES
- Château Chasse Spleen's large 100-hectare vineyard on the left bank is planted with 52% Cabernet Sauvignon, 39% Merlot, 5% Petit Verdot and 4% Cabernet Franc. This shows a major change from what was planted, with an increase in Merlot and a decrease in Cabernet Sauvignon. The Cabernet Franc seems to come and go here, as it has been removed and subsequently replanted.
- The vines are on average 30 years old. The terroir is gravelly, with clay and limestone soil. However, this varies as they have parcels in several different vineyards spread across the various communes of the appellation. The vineyard is planted at a density ranging from 8,000 to 10,000 vines per hectare.
VINIFICATION
Chasse Spleen red wine is vinified in a combination of stainless steel and wooden vats. Malolactic fermentation takes place in vats. Chasse Spleen wine is aged in 40% new French oak barrels for 12 to 15 months before bottling.
