Châteauneuf du Pape Amiral G 2010 - Château de Vaudieu

Robert M. Parker: ‘Made from 100% old Grenache vines, the 2010 Châteauneuf du Pape Amiral G (only 120 cases produced) once again reminded me of Barroche's Châteauneuf du Pape Pur. There is perhaps a little mourvèdre in the blend. The 2010 has an alcohol content of 16%. As one colleague put it, ‘it's like Fifty Shades of Grey, it's just fifty shades of Grenache in one bottle’. This exquisite, near-perfect 2010 has huge aromas of creamy strawberry, black cherry, raspberry jam, spring flowers, blossom, liquorice and lavender. A wine of enormous stature, majestic richness and no rough edges, as sexy as Grenache gets. This magnificent example of old Provençal vines will give us immense pleasure over the next 10 to 15 years... if you can resist it that long..."’
With this superb cuvée, the Domaine wished to pay homage to the Admiral de Gérin and the Grenache, the admiral of the Châteauneuf-du-pape grape varieties.
Grape variety: 100% Grenache noir.
Terroir : This cuvée is made from one of our best plots of Grenache noir on a soil of rolled pebbles and red clay situated on one of the highest points of the Villafranchian plateau of Chateauneuf-du-pape.
Harvest: After waiting for optimal ripeness, the grapes were harvested by hand on September 27th 2017.
Vinification: The grapes are destemmed and crushed then conveyed into a truncated-cone-shaped concrete vat. The temperature is maintained at around 25°C during alcoholic fermentation. Maceration lasts about 30 days during which pumping over and racking over are carried out daily according to the tastings of our oenologist Philippe CAMBIE.
Ageing : The Grenache grapes are aged for 18 months in new 600l demi-muids.
Tasting: This cuvée, in homage to the founder of Château de Vaudieu, shows both the finesse and the power of Grenache. On the nose, it presents notes of Provencal herbs and morello cherry jam, while the palate is balanced between a powerful fruit and a minerality characteristic of the terroir.
Food and wine pairing: A Navarin of lamb, a braised rib of beef, a roast suckling pig, or a blood pigeon.
