Château La Violette 1985
Pomerol
TASTING:
Cellaring potential: Can be drunk now. A mature wine.
Tasting: Dark ruby/purple, with a surprisingly intense nose of flowers, plums and licorice, this wine has good concentration, low acidity, moderate tannins, medium to full body and a long, almost sumptuous finish.
MORE INFO:
La Violette's small 1.8 hectare vineyard is now planted entirely to 100% Merlot. At one time, there were also Cabernet Franc vines planted, but these vines were removed and replaced with Merlot.
The vineyard has some very old Merlot vines that are nearly 75 years old. The minimal production makes this wine one of the hardest to find in Pomerol! The terroir of La Violette is a complex mix of clay and limestone with gravel and iron deposits that go deep into the soil. The best terroir is located between Le Pin and Trotanoy. These vines are the heart and soul of La Violette.
At Chateau La Violette, vineyard management requires that three days a week be spent manicuring each bunch, removing green or pink berries from around the "wings" to ensure perfectly uniform ripening of the grapes.
