When to drink this wine : Drink now through 2028
Tasted by Parker in 1994 : "Tasted 3 times with consistent scores. This wine is atypical, powerful and masculine for a wine from this estate. It has a deep garnet colour, a floral and perfumed bouquet, very rich and muscular tannins, and great presence and length on the palate. It is astonishing how much tannin remains after 66 years of ageing. The Margaux 1928 will last a century.
MORE ABOUT CHÂTEAU MARGAUX
Château Margaux is a Bordeaux red wine renowned for its elegance and finesse. To accompany this exceptional wine, it's best to choose dishes that highlight its characteristics and don't overshadow it.
Wine and food pairing: Château Margaux
The aim is to find dishes that are not too overpowering in flavor and that let Château Margaux express itself fully. Here are a few suggestions for dishes that go well with Château Margaux:
- Red meats: Red meats such as fillet of beef, rib steak or rack of lamb are classic choices to accompany a powerful wine like Château Margaux. Prepare them grilled, roasted or braised, avoiding overpowering flavors that could mask the subtleties of the wine.
- Game: Château Margaux also goes well with game, such as venison, wild boar or wild duck. Prepare them roasted or in light sauces, choosing simple accompaniments that don't steal the show from the wine.
- Cheeses: Choose hard, mature cheeses such as Comté, Cheddar or Parmesan. Their intense, complex flavors blend well with the subtle aromas of Château Margaux.
- Truffle dishes: If you're looking for a luxurious taste experience, pair Château Margaux with truffle dishes such as truffle pasta, truffle scrambled eggs or truffle mushroom risotto. The earthy flavors of the truffle harmoniously complement the aromatic nuances of the wine.
- Refined cuisine: Château Margaux is a sophisticated wine, perfect for accompanying haute cuisine dishes. Delicate preparations of noble fish, poultry or seafood, combined with light sauces and fresh vegetables, are the perfect match for this prestigious wine.
TERROIR
"From an exceptional terroir comes a great wine.
Château Margaux is located on a privileged site, the genetic heritage of great wines. Indeed, the estate benefits from an excellent climate, which allows the vines to grow and thus favours a harmonious ripening of the grapes. The typicity of the wines is due to the composition of the various soils, but also to the slow and random maturation process, of which only the Château knows all the little secrets.
The 2020 Château Margaux is composed of 89% Cabernet Sauvignon, 8% Merlot, 1% Cabernet Franc and 2% Petit Verdot, accounting for 36% of the harvest. The alcohol weighs in at 13.5%, the IPT is 80 and the pH is 3.67.
SERVICE
Traditionally, the great red Bordeaux wines are served "chambrés" i.e. at room temperature (about 18-19°C). Above this temperature, the nose loses its finesse and the alcohol overwhelms the delicate scents of the bouquet, or even the fruit of young wines; the tannins appear less fleshy and drier. When the temperature is too low, the aromas are difficult to release and the wine appears duller and shorter.
