Tasted by Neal Martin in 2016: "The 1978 Château Margaux is an important wine for two reasons: it was the first under the Mentzelopoulos family after they acquired the property and also, it was their best wine for many years. Today, it is still in great shape. It is light in colour with a deep garnet core. The nose is very seductive with aromas of black fruits, leather, scorched earth, a hint of lavender, all beautifully defined and typically Margaux. The palate is exquisitely balanced, the acidity is well judged, still a little masculine and "solid" compared to the following vintages under Paul Pontallier, but fresh and vital. Of course, there is a grittiness and a touch of rusticity towards the end, but overall this represents a great 1978 from La Rive Gauche and a sign that the Chateau's first growth was back on track after a series of dismal vintages during the 1970s. Tasted in May 2016."
