Second wine of Château Margaux 1900

- Tasted by Neal Martin in 2015: "The Château Margaux 1900 'Deuxième Vin' is an extremely rare and unique wine from the cellar of Mme Teysonneau, which Michael Broadbent unearthed for Christies in 1979. It could be considered a precursor to the Pavillon Rouge of Château Margaux, although I have no idea of its precise origin or how it differs from the grand vin. I have simply adopted the term used by Broadbent in his 'Vintage' tome (see page 25). It was served blind and could have been the highlight of any dinner had it not been followed by the Lafite 1870! This in no way detracts from this remarkable 115-year-old wine. Deep in colour, it had a very intense bouquet of blackcurrant, clove and violet, surprisingly generous after such a long time, and clearly indicative of a great vintage. On the palate, my notes were not far off Broadbent's, commenting on the opulence of this wine (and this was before I knew its vintage). Velvety on the palate and still very much alive, its density was such that there were whispers that a little Hermitage might have crept into the blend! Be that as it may, this was a truly monumental wine that defied all expectations. We wonder what Château Margaux 1900 must be like. Tasted in September 2015."
