Château Montrose is one of the main wine estates in Saint-Estèphe and produces some of the oldest wines in the Médoc. Montrose was owned by Jean-Louis Charmolue from 1962 to 2006, when it was sold to Martin and Olivier Bouygues, owner of the construction company named after them. The proximity of the estuary ensures a microclimate that protects against frost, and the vines, situated on deep clayey-gravelly soils, benefit from a south-east exposure. Montrose is classified as a 2ème Cru Classé in the 1855 Bordeaux wine classification of the AOC St Estèphe.
Montrose wine is typically a blend of 65% Cabernet Sauvignon, 25% Merlot and 10% Cabernet Franc and is aged in oak barrels (30% new) for 18 months. Montrose wines are traditionally very colourful, austere and powerful when young, but have excellent ageing potential and, at maturity, are the quintessence of the clarets of St Estèphe.
Here are a few bottles of Château Montrose. These are vintages that have been highly rated by the top tasters at The Wine Advocate (Parker) and The Wine Spectator. Here's a glimpse of some of them.
