ChâteauPape Clément is a famous 30 hectare wine estate of the Graves vineyard located in Pessac-Léognan in Gironde. It is one of the oldest Grands Crus of Bordeaux. The first harvest took place in 1252 in this vineyard established in the 13th century. Bertrand de Got, the Archbishop of Bordeaux, became Pope in 1305, under the name of Clement V. The Château and then its wine became a true icon.
The Château Pope Clement is sold in 1939 to Paul Montagne. Over time, Montagne's heirs renovated the estate and brought it back to the level of quality that made the reputation of the Château Pape Clément.
Since 1980, Bernard Magrez is the sole owner and the wines of Pape Clément have never been better. This is largely due to lower yields, the picking of much riper and crated fruit, strict selection and the increased use of new French oak barrels for ageing. All these improvements have contributed to the wine's delicacy and power that is recognised today.
The estate offers a blend of 2 grape varieties for tasting:
The estate has vines averaging 34 years old on gravelly and clayey-gravelly soil. A rich vineyard producing a great Pessac Léognan wine. It also possesses that special smoky taste specific to the region.
In addition, 2.5 hectares of the estate are devoted to the production of a white wine made from several grape varieties:
There is a second wine, "Le Clémentin du Pape Clément" for red and white wines. Le Clémentin du Pape Clément made its debut in 1986. The estate also produces a third entry-level wine, "Le Prélat du Château Pape Clément".
