Château d'Yquem 1989
Sauternes - Premier Grand Cru Rated
97/100 Parker
Maturity: 2019 - 2040
By Lisa Perrotti-Brown in 2019: "Medium to deep gold in color, the 1989 d'Yquem is a little closed to begin with, unfolding slowly to give magnificent scents of dried mango, pineapple paste and candied peel with notes of praline, nutmeg, lemon butter and caramel cream plus a stream of crushed stones. The palate offers powerful and wonderfully concentrated notes of dried stone fruit, with provocative hints of hazelnut and a seamless acidic weave, all in a satiny texture and ending on a lingering note of lemon tea and minerals.
About the vintage: This Yquem is remarkable for a very hot year in Bordeaux. 1989 was also the year the vines were hit by a violent hailstorm in July, which damaged the western half of the vineyard. As the berries were still quite small and hard at this stage, the impact was minimized to about 20% crop loss in total. Subsequently, the vines continued to produce a surprisingly concentrated crop this year."
