When to drink this wine? 2015 - 2030
Tasted by Neal Martin in 2015: ‘Château Yquem 1869 is from a great 19th century Sauternes vintage, as this astonishing piece of history testifies. According to Michael Broadbent, it was harvested on 5 September, earlier than the others. This particular bottle was a very deep, almost sherry-like colour, but fortunately there was absolutely no sign of oxidation on the nose. Instead, there were intoxicating scents of fig, crème brûlée and syrup, an extraordinarily charming bouquet that is immediately seductive. The palate has an ineffable balance and harmony, both typical of its age and unaware of it. The texture is slightly honeyed, soft on the palate with figs and dates, exotic with what might even be described as red fruit notes on the finish, perhaps raspberry jam. This is an astonishing Yquem that must rank among the greatest that have passed my lucky lips.’
Terroir
The vineyard of Château Yquem has 113 hectares of vines. The terroir is at the highest altitude of Sauternes, which gives it a unique microclimate. The microclimate is critical, as it allows the easterly winds to move through the vineyard, helping to eliminate unwanted excess moisture, especially later in the growing season when noble rot sets in.
