Here is the famous Château Yvonne, a superb property in the Loire Valley. Find all the best references of this prestigious estate on Comptoir des Millésimes. It is one of our partner estates, which means that their wines are shipped directly to our cellar after being bottled in their estate. The winemakers reserve an allocation of their cases of wine for us each year. So don't hesitate to create an email alert (in the section my Alerts ) on Château Yvonne in order to be informed first of the latest arrivals.
Located in Parnay, Chateau Yvonne has been surrounded by vineyards since the Middle Ages, when the monks of Fontevraud Abbey brought their influence to the area. The château dates back to the 16th century, but little was heard of it until 1813, when a local winemaker moved in and began producing wine on site. In 1997, Yvonne and Jean-François Lamunière decided to recreate the abandoned vineyard with the help of Françoise Foucault. In 2007, Mathieu Vallée took over and decided to keep the name of Château Yvonne, as a tribute to the incredible work done by the former owners. Today, the estate is one of the best producers of Saumur. The estate is composed of 3 hectares of Chenin Blanc and 8 hectares of Cabernet Franc, all grown organically since 1997.
Today, Matthieu Vallée has established himself as one of the leading producers of Saumur. The vineyards are spread over more than 30 different small parcels, with most of the best vineyards located on "La Côte", or the plateau next to the church in Parnay, overlooking the Loire River. Although much attention has been paid to the limestone outcrop of Brézé, further south, the vineyards of La Côte are historically just as renowned. In addition to the two cuvées Yvonne Blanc and Yvonne Rouge that were historically produced at the property, Matthieu has added several other wines. La Folie is produced from over 10 parcels on the cooler limestone terroir of Champigny. L'Ile Quatre Sous comes from sandy soils and produces a sweet red that is easy to drink immediately. There are also two elusive single vineyard cuvées - Le Gory (Chenin Blanc) and Le Beaumeray (Cabernet Franc), which come from sites that are poised to become Saumur's future first growths.
