If we were to give 4 very great vintages, we would give the following years: 1978, 1989, 1990 and 1998.
The 1978 vintage
From north to south, the vintage will be very great. Some even speak of a vintage of anthology. The beginning of the year had started badly with a delay in the vines, but there were 9 weeks of scorching sunshine to bring all the sugar and alcohol the grapes needed. What also makes the 1978 vintage a great one is the fact that the previous year, a lot of rain filled the water reserves. This allowed the grapes to avoid water stress and thus to reach a slow and complete maturity.
The 1989 vintage
The 1989 vintage is a forgotten vintage because it precedes the 1990 vintage which is an extraordinary vintage. However, that year, the weather gave the grapes everything they needed to flourish and helped the winemaker in his work. A very warm, heady vintage that produced extraordinarily powerful and structured wines.
The 1990 vintage
The 1990 vintage is a very interesting vintage on several points, the first point is that it is a winemaker's vintage where the decisions taken for the harvest and the work in the cellar will be important for the result in the bottle. It is a very, very hot vintage, as well as a very productive vintage, which makes it a great year in terms of quality and quantity. The wines will be in the same spirit as the 1989 with a little more finesse and complexity.
The 1998 vintage
The 1998 vintage is a vintage that will demonstrate that certain disasters can be beneficial for wine. At the beginning of the year, the vineyards of the Rhone Valley were hit by heavy frosts, which reduced the mass emergence of buds in the vineyard. After these frosts, the vine will start to grow again, the remaining buds will be able to take advantage of all the sunshine from June to August which will be magnificent. The fewer buds there are on the vine, the more concentrated the grapes will be, which will significantly help the remaining buds to reach a very good maturity. In this vintage, the Châteauneuf-du-Pape, a tribute to Jacques Perrin, as well as the Landonne de Guigal will get a Parker's rating of 100 out of 100.
In more recent vintages, the 2000, 2005, 2011, 2009, 2010, 2015 and 2016 are all very good vintages.
The 2015 vintage
The 2015 vintage is considered a generous one, thanks to several weeks of sunshine and timely rainfall. The juices are well concentrated in colour, structure and aromatic complexity. A little less powerful than previous vintages, it should be drunk by 2025-2030.
The 2016 vintage
This vintage is without doubt the greatest of the recent vintages. Some even compare it to the magnificent 1990 vintage...
The winter and spring went very well and the vineyard benefited from a warmer than average weather and summer with several days at 35°C. The grapes quickly reached their near optimal maturity and a little rain was needed in September to help the grapes reach their peak. The 2016 vintage is therefore a full-bodied, powerful vintage, but with a nice freshness, a sign of great ageing potential.
You now have all the keys in hand to taste and enjoy some very nice Châteauneuf-du-Pape wines.
Chateauneuf du Pape is one of the most renowned appellations of the Vallée du Rhônewith Côte-Rôtie. Known worldwide for their power and charisma, the wines of Chateauneuf du Pape are the elite of the French vineyard. 3,000 hectares are planted throughout the appellation with an average production of over 90,000 hl, of which a tiny part is white wine (700 hl). It is produced in the communes of Châteauneuf du Pape, Orange, Bédarrides, Sorgues and Courthézon, in the Vaucluse. A large vineyard on the southern slopes that produces a powerful wine, based on 13 grape varieties. However, the blend is dominated by Grenache, Mourvèdre and a small part of Syrah (which gives it its particular colour). This appellation has come back in force since the 1970s.
Although the red wines of Châteauneuf du Pape are known to have many different styles, they share common aromas when tasted, such as notes of fresh red and black cherries, strawberries, kirsch, black pepper, black raspberry, spices, earth, garrigue and fresh herbs typical of the region. The textures develop with remarkable abundance when young and can adopt silky characteristics with age.
One of the great qualities most shared by the red wines of Châteauneuf du Pape is the wide range of drinking possibilities. Most Châteauneuf du Pape wines are delicious when young. The majority of the wines do not need to be aged or cellared before they can be enjoyed. Equally important is the fact that they have the ability to age and develop.
Each grape variety brings a particular note to the wine produced; Grenache and Cinsault give warmth, liquor and sweetness; Mourvèdre, Syrah, Muscadin, Vaccarèse provide colour, solidity and smoothness; and Mourvèdre, Syrah, Muscadin, Vaccarèse provide colour, solidity, conservation; the counoise and the picpoul provide the vinosity, the pleasure, the freshness and a particular bouquet; finally the clairette, the bourboulenc, the roussanne, the picardan give the finesse, the fire and the brightness. The wines are therefore always high in colour and warmth.
They have a powerful bouquet reminiscent of oriental spices and are of many different types: soils of galets roulés give them a lot of strength while sandy or sandy-clay soils give them finesse and elegance.
