Anne Claude LEFLAIVE - Loire Valley Wines

Here is the famous Clau de Nelles, whose reins are held by the famous Anne Claude Leflaive. Find all the best references of this prestigious estate on Comptoir des Millésimes. This is one of our partner estates, which means that their wines are sent directly to our cellar after being bottled on their estate. The winemakers reserve an allocation of their cases of wine for us each year. So don't hesitate to create an email alert (in the my alerts section) on Clau de Nell to be the first to know about the latest arrivals.

Presentation of Clau de Nell

Domaine Clau de Nell is located in the Anjou wine region, south-east of Angers and north-west of Saumur, in the village of Ambillou-Château. The vineyards are up to 100 years old and are situated on a south-facing hillside. The property consists of 12 contiguous hectares (30 acres), of which 5 hectares (12.4 acres) are planted to Cabernet Franc, 4.5 hectares (11 acres) to Chenin Blanc, 2 hectares (4.9 acres) to Grolleau and 1 hectare (2.5 acres) to Cabernet Sauvignon. The soil is red sandstone and flint over tuffeau (the soft limestone of the region). The vineyard is situated on a slope at an altitude of only 90 metres (295 feet), 120 kilometres (75 miles) from the Atlantic Ocean. From the top of the hill, surrounded by an open landscape, the Loire River can be seen in the distance.

History of the vineyard

These vineyards have been biodynamically farmed since 2000. Significant financial difficulties and a call for help from the former owners brought this property to the attention of Anne-Claude Leflaive. In 2006, Anne-Claude and her husband, Christian Jacques, had created a company to help new biodynamic growers take advantage of their established business network. In order to help the struggling business, they bought the estate in 2008, which had not produced wine for three years due to lack of funds. It was a moment of serendipity for the abandoned vineyard and the Leflaive-Jacques family, culminating in the arrival of Sylvain Potin, experienced in biodynamic viticulture, as the estate's manager. Christian Jacques concludes: "We did not choose Clau de Nell, it is rather Clau de Nell that chose us!

The wine-making process

Yields are less than 30 hectolitres per hectare (2.2 tonnes per acre). The grapes are harvested by hand and completely destemmed before the vatting process, which lasts 20 to 30 days. The wine cellars are centuries-old, historic troglodyte (limestone) caves created from the tufa quarries, which maintain a constant temperature of 14°Celsius (57°Fahrenheit). The wines are aged for 18 months in oak barrels in the cellars that were ready to house the new wines.
