"During my visit to the estate last year, I reviewed the new 2017 bottle, somehow skipping the Côtes du Roussillon Villages le Clos des Fées 2016. Don't worry, it's a reassuringly good blend of 50% Syrah, 20% Carignan and Grenache and 10% Mourvèdre, aged for 20 months in new French oak. Concentrated and rich without being too dense or difficult to drink, it offers blackberry, cedar and spice notes on the nose, a full-bodied, velvety palate and a lingering, slightly tannic but appetizing finish. Despite an alcohol content of 15% (quite typical for this bottling), there is no sensation of over-ripeness or overweight - the wine remains wonderfully drinkable".
Hervé Bizeul tells you all about it:
Plots of selected old vines on clay-limestone hillsides. Equal blend of Syrah, Mourvèdre, Grenache and Carignan. Intensive green work: disbudding, inter-core shoots, load regulation, leaf thinning. Search for perfect phenolic maturity, adapted to each grape variety and each terroir. Sorting at harvest time and then after destemming. Storage and transport in refrigerated lorries. Vinification partly in new 5 hl demi-muids, hot run-off, malolactic and ageing in 100% new barrels. All pumping over, racking and putting into barrels are carried out manually, without pumping over. Aged on lees for 18 months. Unfiltered. Powerful, concentrated wine, rich in taste, with an exceptional creamy texture, which nevertheless remains fresh and taut. Delicious the year after bottling, if you like young and powerful wines and if you take care to decant it. Often closes in year II. Then slowly matures and gradually acquires its mature character while preserving its fruit. Cellaring potential 8 to 15 years.
