What is the Clos des Papes ?
The Clos des Papes is a wine estate that covers 29 hectares. The annual production is about 115 000 bottles. The wines of Paul Avril could be the models of the classic Châteauneuf-du-pape. The property is divided into many parcels and is located on very different terroirs, ranging from sandy soils to clay-limestone soils and rocks. The wines of Le Clos des Papes spend a little over a year in barrels and tuns before being bottled without filtration.
The blend, although varying annually depending on conditions, is primarily Grenache (65%) with the remainder being Mourvèdre, Syrah and a small amount of Counoise.
Clos des Papes The modern era
The current owner and director is Paul Vincent Avril, who was born in 1965. He started working at Clos des Papes in 1988. Paul Avril trained at several other wineries before joining the family business at Clos des Papes. Paul Vincent Avril even did a stint at Chateau Mouton Rothschild in Bordeaux where he learned more about winemaking and the business.
You could say that Paul Avril is a modern traditionalist. On the one hand, he de-stems the grapes, seeks low yields and does not filter. On the other hand, Paul Vincent Avril avoids new oak and does not consider producing a high-end cuvée.
His philosophy is that this would only harm their main brand, Clos des Papes, a wine that has been produced for over a century. It was in 2002 that Paul Vincent Avril had the idea to start using the unique embossed bottle that we still see today for Clos des Papes.
Cellars of the Clos des Papes
The Clos des Papes vineyard consists of 35 hectares of vines that are spread over 24 separate parcels of the Châteauneuf du Pape appellation for the production of their wine. 4 hectares in their cooler terroir are reserved for the grapes used in the production of Clos des Pape Blanc, their white Châteauneuf du Pape wine.
31 hectares are used to plant the grapes for their red Chateauneuf du Pape. Part of what makes Clos des Papes wine special is the range of different terroirs and soils in which their vineyards are located.
The Clos des Papes vineyards have a wide range of terroirs, from the rocky soils of the Crau to areas of sand, limestone and gravel. Perhaps some of the complexities found in Clos des Papes are in the wine because of the different soils in which their vines are planted.
Some of their best Grenache is planted in sandy soils in the west and southeast of the appellation. In the northeastern part of the appellation, there are more vines planted in soils with rocks, stones, clay and limestone.
It is the blending of these various terroirs and grape varieties that gives birth to Clos des Papes.
Most of these vines are dedicated to red wines. Only 10% are reserved for the production of white wine. The white wine of the Clos des Papes made its debut in 1955. At Clos des Papes, biodynamic agriculture is practiced. In 2010, the property was certified "Agriculture Biologique".
Clos des Papes remains one of the best wines of the region. The prices have increased, but so has the quality. The wine has the ability to age and evolve for 2 decades or more. The 2016 may be the best wine they have produced. But with so many great vintages produced here, it is really hard to pick a favorite.
However, a bottle of 1945 Clos des Papes recently tasted showed how well this wine ages! This bottle was the best fully matured Southern Rhône wine I have ever tasted.
