Le Clos du Caillou is a wine estate in the south of Rhône which has grown in importance over the last five years and whose wines are now highly sought after in Europe and the United States. The 9-hectare estate is located in Courthézon, on the edge of the Châteauneuf-du-Pape appellation, and its vineyards are adjacent to those of Château Beaucastel. Since 1996, the estate has been run by Jean Denis Vacheron, who learned his trade at Domaine Vacheron, one of the main estates in Sancerre, in the Loire Valley. Jean Denis is a meticulous winemaker and since 1996, the wines have displayed greater depth of fruit, richness and complexity. The wines are characterized by the purity of their fruit and their smooth, almost velvety texture. They are bottled without filtration.
Their terroir varies from sand to limestone and rocky soils. While the average age of their vines is over 40 years old, some of them are over a hundred years old. The fruits of these vines go into La réserve of Clos du Caillou. While most of their vineyards are used to make red wines, 0.57 hectares are used to produce white wines of Châteauneuf du Pape.
Domaine du Clos du Caillou produces 4 red wines: Châteauneuf du Pape, Les Safres, Les Quartz and their top-of-the-range wine La Réserve, produced from a blend often composed of 60% old Grenache, 30% Mourvèdre and other grape varieties. There are also 2 wines in Châteauneuf du Pape Blanc.
