Guide to the Condrieu appellation | Rhône

 

The wine of Condrieu is produced only from the Viognier grape variety. Its production area covers 7 communes. It is one of the smallest crus of the Rhône. The appellation was created in 1940 and today more than 40 producers produce wines from just over 100 hectares of vines. The wines are therefore confidential, it is the price of a maximum yield fixed by a decree at 40 hectolitres per hectare, but wisely reduced to about fifteen hectolitres by the producers who know that quantity and quality do not go well together when it comes to wine. Note: Landlocked in the heart of the Condrieu appellation, on a granite amphitheatre of less than 4 hectares, the Château-Grillet gives its name to a unique appellation: AOC Château-Grillet. It produces very pure Condrieu wines, more mineral than the classic Condrieu, and of great length.

 

The wines of Condrieu are dry with a wonderful floral nose of peaches, apricots, violets and pears, they are quite alcoholic, with low acidity. The Condrieu wines are best appreciated when young but some vintages have an exceptional ageing capacity.
