Condrieu 2020 Les Vernons - Yves Cuilleron
Origin: A parcel-based wine from the village of Condrieu, planted in an amphitheatre on the Vernon hillside. The vines, very steep on a biotite granite soil, are exposed to the South to obtain an optimal maturity for this complex wine.
Terroir: biotite granite.
Grape varieties : Viognier.
Viticulture: planted at high density (8,000-10,000 vines per ha). Treatments are limited to a maximum depending on the weather, no insecticides to preserve biodiversity, little fertiliser and only organic. Control of vigour and yields, leaf thinning, green harvesting for better ripening of the grapes. Disbudding in spring.
Vinification and ageing: hand-picked, traditional and plot-based vinification. Use of as few oenological products as possible (indigenous yeasts). Vinification (alcoholic and malolactic fermentation) and ageing: 50% in 30 hectolitre wooden tuns and 50% in Burgundy barrels without racking, 16 months on lees.
Tasting notes: Expressive nose of yellow fruits (apricots, peaches) and honey. The toasted flavour of the dried fruits reminds us of the wood ageing.
Taste: Slender and pure on the palate. The tension of the terroir is enveloped by the mellowness of the Viognier and gives a balanced mouthfeel followed by a tangy finish.
Cellaring: To be enjoyed young for its fruity aromas (3 to 4 years) or for its evolving aromas (10 years and more).
Pairing: whole foie gras, fresh or pan-fried.
