Roc de Cambes 2014
Cote de Bourg
90/100 Parker
Anticipated aging: 2019 - 2032
Tasted by Neal Martin in 2017: "The 2014 Roc de Cambes has a lovely bouquet - very pure and intense - of black cherry, blueberry fruit and crushed rose petal that develops with time. The palate is medium-bodied, with ripe, fleshy red and black fruits, supple tannins, notes of orange zest and pomegranate and a fairly structured finish that cuts through just a bit quickly on the finish"
Tasting note: This is a wonderfully balanced wine, with red fruit and toasty oak notes. Full and long, with fine tannins and a bright finish. Superb.
Presentation of the vineyard: 12.5 hectares of the vineyard is planted with 85% Merlot and 15% Cabernet Sauvignon. The terroir is mainly composed of limestone and clay soils, similar to those found on the right bank of Bordeaux, particularly in Saint-Émilion. The vineyard is south-southwest facing on the top of a plateau, with a view of the river. The vines are old. In fact, many of the vines used for Roc de Cambes are nearly 50 years old, which is impressive. They have vines that are over 50 years old, which adds to the concentration, character and complexity of the wines.
Roc de Cambes is vinified in traditional concrete vats. Malolactic fermentation takes place in French oak barrels. The wine is then matured in an average of 50% new French oak barrels for 18 to 24 months before bottling. The vines are much further up the slopes and closer to the Gironde River, which creates a cooler, more clayey terroir.
