The Crozes-Hermitage is a French wine of appellation d'origine contrôlée of the Rhône. Here is some essential information about this beautiful appellation and the style of the wine produced.
It is produced in 10 communes around Crozes-Hermitage and Tain-l'Hermitage. The vineyard, straddling the 45th parallel, covers 1600 hectares of vines. Fifteen times larger than the famous Hermitage from which it took part of its name, the Crozes-Hermitage vineyard surrounds it to the north and south. It would be difficult to determine the common characteristics of these wines - little cousins of the Hermitage -, as the terroirs and the talents of the winegrowers differ so much. 90% of the wines of the appellation are red, made exclusively from the Syrah grape variety. However an addition of 15% of white grape variety (Rousanne, Marsanne) in the production of Crozes Hermitage red is authorized. They offer a very wide range of aromas, less characterized than the neighbouring appellations such as Hermitage, Cornas or Côte-Rotie.
The wines are tender, with spicy aromas and a good balance between tannin and fruit. Animal notes (roasted meat, dry or grilled ham) will develop after a few years of ageing. The white wines of Crozes-Hermitage are produced only from the Marsanne and Rousanne grape varieties. They are full-bodied and characterized by flower aromas. The best ones will keep for a few years in the cellar and will evolve on notes of dried fruits. It is generally accepted that most Crozes-Hermitage wines have a lesser longevity than Hermitage wines, unless you rely on renowned producers such as Alain Graillot, Domaine Belle, Jaboulet, Chapoutier, Delas or Yann Chave.
