Troisième Cru Classé - Margaux

Château Desmirail is a wine estate located in Margaux. This great Bordeaux wine owns 28 hectares of vines and produces an average of 60,000 bottles per year.

What are the specifics of Château Desmirail?

The history of the estate began in 1661 when Jean Desmirail obtained the Bordeaux vineyard as a dowry by marriage to one of the Rauzan daughters. In the following century, the great Rauzan estate was divided into 3 unique parcels, giving birth to the Château Rauzan Segla, Château Rauzan Gassies and Château Desmirail.

The irremovability of the 1855 classification finds, with this property, a major flaw. Dismembered following the 1914-1918 war, the château as such became Marquis d'Alesme-Becker. Lucien Lurton, owner of the château Brane-Cantenac has reconstituted the estate by buying back plots of land, including one of 2 hectares in the château Palmer. It wasn't until 1980 that Desmirail reappeared, with nothing but cellars in Cantenac as a château. In fact, it was for a very long time an honest cru bourgeois, with the exception of a few vintages in the 1980s. The takeover made its effects felt in 1998, which seems to continue in the following years.

Today, the estate is still owned and managed by the Lurton family and their human and technical investments can be felt from the 2015 vintage, an exceptional vintage and without doubt the best product at Desmirail.

The vineyard located on a deep sandy-clayey gravelly soil offers a wine made from different grape varieties for tasting:

70% Cabernet Sauvignon
Merlot 29%
Petit Verdot 1%

After traditional vinification, the wine is aged in 40% new French oak barrels for 12 to 18 months.

A second wine is also produced at Château Desmirail: the Château Fontarney.
