Quarts 2019 - Domaine Belargus
Appellation Anjou Contrôlée
98/100 Parker
Ageing potential: 2028 - 2060
“Les Quarts is the original, south-facing parcel that gave its name to the Quarts-de-Chaume appellation. Indeed, until the French Revolution, the lords of Haute Guerche, tenants of the Chaume vineyards, paid the nuns of the Ronceray abbey “the best quarters of the harvest”. This is how the name Quarts-de-Chaume came about,” writes Ivan Massonnat. The soils are based on Precambrian schists which, according to Massonnat, bring finesse and length to this cuvée. From a 3.08-hectare parcel, the citrus-colored 2019 Anjou Sec Quarts opens with a deep, intense yet pure bouquet, refined and elegant, noble and aromatic with perfectly ripe, concentrated stone fruits, jellied fruits, lemons, grapefruit, salts and crystalline rocks. Crystal-clear and fresh on the palate, this elegant Chenin is full-bodied, intense, dense and soft, yet refined and stimulating, with noble citrus bitters and fine tannins on the long, tight, intense finish. Reduced power combined with finesse and elegance. Far too young to serve at this stage, this is a promising Quarts, very intense but still restrained, not as austere as the Rouères and not as rich and expansive as the Veau, but perhaps something in between. Notes of graphite appear on the finish. This is another rather intellectual dry Chenin from the Quarts-de-Chaume appellation, which can only be used for noble sweet wines. Natural cork. Tasted in September 2021. Stephan Reinhardt
- Presentation of the cuvée : "Les Quarts" is the original parcel that gave its name to the Quarts-de-Chaume appellation. Indeed, until the Revolution, the lords of Haute Guerche, tenants of the Chaume tenement, paid the nuns of the Ronceray Abbey with "the best quarters of the harvest"... The name "Quarts-de-Chaume" was born. Our parcel covers almost half of the 7 Ha of the locality, exposed on the southern slope of the hill. The soils are based on Precambrian schists, which bring finesse and length. A fine bitterness, signature of this terroir, brings complexity and length in mouth.
- Domaine Belargus offers a selection of superb dry white wines each year. It is in the best vintages that Belargus produces great sweet wines by letting the magic of botrytis offer superb vintages.
