Domaine Belle has roots in Hermitage that go back several generations. The estate was founded by Louis Belle in the 1930s. At the time, the harvest was sold to local merchants or cooperatives. Louis Belle became one of the founding members of the now famous Tain l'Hermitage wine-making cooperative. In 1971, this began to change when the Domaine Belle, then run by Albert Belle, began buying additional plots of vines in the area. Domaine Belle built its first modern winery and cellars in 1990. Philippe Belle has been in charge of the estate since 2003.
Domaine Belle owns 31 hectares of vines in the northern Vallée du Rhône. Their best vines are in Hermitage in the vineyards of Les Murets and Diognières, which have a terroir of granitic, limestone, sandy and gravelly soils.
However, many of these vines are located in sandier and calcareous soils. Domaine Belle produces red and white wines in other appellations of the northern Rhône, notably Crozes Hermitage and St. Joseph .
In L'Hermitage, the Domaine Belle has approximately 1.5 hectares of vines planted in the lieux-dits of Diognières and Murets. They have old vines, some of which are more than 50 years old. As of the 2014 vintage, Domaine Belle has started to use 100% organic farming techniques in all its vineyards.
Domaine Belle produces 2 ranges of wines in Hermitage: a red wine and a white wine.
