Domaine de La Solitude Cornelia Constanza 2018 in Magnum
Vintage 2018: 96/100 Parker
Cellaring potential: 2020 - 2030
By Joe Czerwinski in 2020: "Made from century-old Grenache in a section of the Crau with safflower soils, the 2018 Châteauneuf du Pape Cornelia Constanza was aged in concrete (60%) and foudre (40%). Explosive notes of black cherry and liquorice mark the nose, while the full-bodied palate is ripe and inviting without going overboard. You'll need to watch the serving temperature carefully to ensure it doesn't get too hot, but the tannins are supple and silky. Dense and concentrated, this is serious stuff, with impressive length on the slightly chocolatey and spicy finish. I wouldn't bet on it aging for more than a decade, but as a mouthful of decadence to drink early, it's hard to beat."
- Cornelia Constanza is produced as a tribute to Cornelia Costanza Barberini (1716-1797), the last princess of the Barberini family. She married Giulio Cesare Colonna di Sciarra, Prince of Carbognano. All of the Barberini family's Italian property reverted to the Colonna family.
- Grape varieties: 100% Grenache Noir
- Age of the vines: Over 100 years old
- Yield : 18 hectolitres/hectare, 3000 bottles, 100 magnums
- Agriculture: sustainable
- Vinification: The grapes come from the oldest vineyard on the estate, the Grenache, which is over 100 years old. Located on the western slope of "La Crau" on a soil of colluvium mixing Gallets roulés and Safres. After crushing and partial destemming, the grapes are vinified in the cellars by gravity in truncated concrete vats. Maceration for 35 days with gentle extractions allows us to obtain the powerful yet supple tannins that are characteristic of our wines.
- Aging: 60% in concrete vats and 40% in tuns for 18 months.
- Food pairing : Venison in "grand veneur" sauce with blueberry and chestnut confit, duck with wild mushroom sauce, stuffed pigeon, capon with truffles, chocolate cake, cherry clafoutis, comté cheese
- Tasting notes: A full-bodied, elegant and refined wine, tannic yet velvety, with notes of gooseberry, caramel, cinnamon, cardamom and Szechuan pepper, finishing very long.
- It is recommended to decant it 1 hour before tasting.
