Here is the famous Domaine de Montcalmès, a superb property in the Languedoc. Find all the best references of this prestigious domain on Comptoir des Millésimes. This is one of our partner estates, which means that their wines are shipped directly to our cellar following their bottling in their estate. The winemakers reserve an allocation of their cases of wine for us each year. So don't hesitate to create an email alert (in the section my Alerts) on the Domaine de Montcalmès in order to be informed first of the latest arrivals.
Frédéric Pourtalié manages about 25 hectares of vines in the newly created Terrasses du Larzac appellation. Based in Puechabon, part of the vineyard is located in the neighboring villages of Aniane and Saint Saturnin. Until 1998, this family estate sold all its grapes to the local cooperative. In 1999, Frédéric and his sister Muriel took over Domaine Montcalmès and, for the first time, produced and bottled wine from their own vines. Frédéric took his time before making this decision, after training with Alain Graillot (Crozes Hermitage), the Alary family at Oratoire St. Martin and his neighbor, Laurent Vaillé at Grange des Pères. Frédéric's property is located a stone's throw from the Grange des Pères, the Mas de Daumas Gassac and the Mas Julien.
Frédéric's deep love and respect for the terroir of the region is evident from the moment you engage him in conversation. His own vineyards include soils that range from clay and limestone (what Frédéric calls limestone scree) to rolled pebbles, as found in Châteauneuf du Pape. This diversity of terroirs gives the wines of Montcalmès balance, complexity and concentration. The blend includes three red varieties: Syrah, which accounts for 60-65% of the blend, Grenache (about 20%) and Mourvedre (15-20%). It is a true testament to this terroir that the grapes that Frederic's family once sold in bulk are now found in 3-star Michelin restaurants throughout France and are sought after worldwide. There is a red and a white cuvée.
