- Tasted in 2021 by Stephan Reinhardt: "The 2017 Bourgueil Domaine du Bel Air Grand-Mont opens with fine, elegant, yeasty aromas on the pure, fresh, earthy nose. The wine is silky, fresh and deep, firm and taut on the palate, grippy but not astringent, and reveals remarkably fine lacework of tannin and acidity. If you aerate the 2017 generously, the dark ruby-colored Grand-Mont opens generously intense, elegant and broad on the nose, with ripe cherry and the beautiful leather, black tea and spicy graphite aromas of a classic. The wine reveals remarkable purity and freshness on the palate, as well as a silky, elegant, well-balanced texture with fine tannins and a long, intense, powerful finish that has now opened up terrifically. There's a nervousness and mineral tension from start to finish and a concentration in the mouth that gives great pleasure. 13% alcohol. Tasted in May 2021."
The domain tells you about it :
VINEYARD:
Terroir and soils: Clay-limestone. Parcels located on the top of the plateau. Southern exposure. Average age of the vines: 70 years.
Planting density: 5000 vines/ha.
Philosophy: Organic Agriculture (Certified by Ecocert in 2000)
IN THE CELLAR :
Vinification and maturation: In the cellar, the grapes are entirely destemmed and then sorted again on a table before being vatted. Fermentation is traditional and with indigenous yeasts after a pre-fermentation cold maceration. Vatting is gentle and lasts an average of 20 to 30 days with regular pumping over and punching down. The wines are then aged in barrels or demi-muids, the proportion of new barrels varying according to the vintages. The Gauthier family is fortunate to have old caves carved into the tufa rock that serve as a cosy nest for the wines. They rest there, serenely, in a stable and caulked environment with natural temperatures ideal for conservation. This cuvée was aged in 2 and 3 wine barrels for 24 months. The wines are then bottled without filtration.
TASTING ADVICE :
This wine can be drunk now provided that it is opened in advance for at least 2 hours or decanted. This Bourgueil can be kept in the cellar for 8 to 10 years.
