Partner estate in Languedoc: Domaine l'Aiguelière

This is a very great Languedoc wine.

Domaine l'Aiguelière was formed 30 years ago with the association of Aimé Commeyras, from an old family of winegrowers in the Montpeyroux region of the Languedoc, and Dr. Pierre-Louis Teissedre, professor of oenology at the University of Bordeaux. The estate attracted international attention when critic Robert Parker gave scores of 95 and 96 to its best vintages, the Côte Rousse and Côte Dorée, two almost entirely Syrah bottled wines from different soils and vineyards, which also seem to be extremely well rated for their obvious quality.

The estate today

After Aimé's death, his younger brother Auguste took over the reins of the winemaking, assisted by Marc Esclarmonde, a very competent young oenologist, and the team is now completed by Yu Huang, a Chinese student who stayed at the estate after a very successful internship.

Montpeyroux is located about 15 kilometres east of Montpellier, a sub-region of the Terrasses du Larzac appellation which itself did not achieve full appellation status until 2014, although it has long been recognised as one of the best terroirs in the Languedoc. This is due to its proximity to the Massif Central mountain range, which creates a significant diurnal gap (the difference between hot daytime temperatures and cool night-time temperatures, especially in summer) and to the diversity of soils, including sandy clays, red earths rich in iron and some with a high limestone content.

The 22 ha of Domaine l'Aiguelière's vineyards are divided into 19 separate plots, at varying altitudes, with the most sought-after hillsides consisting of clay on limestone soils. The estate has no need to spray the vines and this is due to the refreshing breezes blowing from the mountains. Yields never exceed 25 hl/ha and are often much lower. The Commeyras family continues to favour research and precision in its agriculture and winemaking, constant qualities instilled by the founders, who combined their viticultural and academic knowledge. In fact, the Commeyras family had been winemakers in the region for many generations, but it was Aimé's dissatisfaction with the wines that others produced from his grapes that led to the creation of Domaine l'Aiguelière.
