Château Durfort-Vivens is a prestigious 55-hectare wine estate located in Margaux in the Gironde. In the AOC Médoc, it is ranked Second Grand Cru in the official 1855 Bordeaux wine classification.
What are the specificities of Château Durfort-Vivens?
The Château takes its name from the association of the names of the first owners. Durfort coming from Durfort Duras and Vivens coming from the Viscount de Vivens owner in 1844 which gives birth to Château Durfort Vivens.
At that time the wines of Château Durfort-Vivens were very popular. The 1844 vintage was sold at a higher price than any other Margaux except for the famous Château Margaux.
Gonzague Lurton, who took over the property in 1992, manages it today. Under his leadership, the Château Durfort-Vivens has been modernised with new cellars and new cement and wooden fermentation tanks in the cellars on the left bank.
From the 2013 harvest, the estate has become 100% organic and biodynamic. They obtained their certification in biodynamic and organic agriculture in 2016 from Ecocert and Biodyvin. The Château Durfort has thus become the first cru classé of the Margaux appellation to be certified 100% biodynamic Demeter.
The vineyard offers in tasting a wine composed of 3 grape varieties:
Vinified in a combination of wood and concrete, temperature-controlled vats and amphorae, the Durfort-Vivens wine is then aged in a combination of approximately 40% new French oak barrels and clay amphorae for an average of 18 months, depending on the quality and character of the vintage.
In order to best express its terroir, the wine estate also produces a second wine sold under two different names: Vivens and Le Relais de Durfort Vivens.
