Who is François Villard?

The Domaine François Villard is a wine estate in the Vallée-du-Rhône, located in Condrieu. The great wines of François Villard are mainly located in the Condrieu AOC, but also in other appellations such as: Saint-Péray, Saint-Joseph, Côte-Rôtie, Vin de Pays, Vin de Pays des Collines Rhonadiennes. Described by Robert Parker as one of the "stars" of the northern Rhône, François also acquired a small plot in Côte-Rôtie and a few hectares in Saint-Joseph. As a former chef, François brings his complex palette to the winery to produce wines of power and grace that age for years.

The terroir of the northern Rhône is, in a word, incredible. The fully exposed hillsides facing east are covered with terraces first created by the Romans. The soil is made up of small gravel and decomposed schist on a granite base. The exposure allows excellent ripening of the Viognier and Syrah grown on these slopes and exceptional water drainage (to the point that the terraces still need to be repaired). The climate is hot with a much cooler night than in the south.

François Villard produces dry and sweet styles of Condrieu and often adds a small percentage of viognier to his syrah. One of the estate's best wines, François Villard La Brocarde, can contain up to 13% Viognier, depending on the vintage.
