Gigondas wines are produced in the southern Rhône valley, at the foot of the Dentelles de Montmirail, in a magnificent setting. The region's winegrowing history dates back to Roman times. The name “Gigondas” comes from the Latin word Jocunditas, meaning “joy” or “gladness”, in reference to the pleasure derived from its wines. During the Roman Empire, the region was already renowned for its wines.Over the centuries, viticulture has developed thanks to the rich soils and Mediterranean climate, ideal for vines.
The Gigondas appellation was recognized in 1971, when the region's red and rosé wines were granted their own Appellation d'Origine Contrôlée (AOC), breaking away from the Côtes du Rhône appellation.
The Gigondas AOC covers some 1,200 hectares, exclusively in the commune of Gigondas. The terroir is characterized by a variety of soils: calcareous marl, scree and red sandstone, which bring complexity and richness to the wines. The Mediterranean climate, with hot, dry summers, is tempered by the Mistral wind, which protects the vines from disease.
The appellation is dominated by red wines (99% of production) and, to a lesser extent, rosés.The main grape varieties used are Grenache noir (at least 50%), Syrah and Mourvèdre, often combined with other varieties such as Cinsault.
Red wines: Gigondas reds are powerful, full-bodied and complex. They offer intense aromas of ripe red fruits (cherry, raspberry), spices (pepper, licorice), and sometimes hints of garrigue, leather or truffle as they age. Tannins are present but well-integrated, giving them good ageing potential (10 to 15 years, or even longer for some cuvées).
Rosé wines : Although rare, Gigondas rosés are generous, with a lovely freshness, red fruit and citrus aromas, and a fuller texture than Provençal rosés.

Some exceptional cuvées, made from the oldest pre-phylloxera vines, are produced by renowned estates such as Saint Cosme, Santa Duc, St. Gayan, St. Damien, des Papes and Perrin et fils. Although the search for them can be long and arduous, these viticultural treasures are well worth the effort. However, as their production is extremely limited, these cuvées are often considered unobtainable.
