Gigondas 2014 " Le Claux " - Chateau de St Cosme
-
Very old grenaches planted at the place called "Le Claux". Whole harvest. Miocene limestone marls in the alluvial cone of the Font des Papes. Aged for twelve months: 20% in new pieces - 50% in pieces of one wine - 30% in pieces of two wines. Le Claux is located a few metres from Hominis Fides. This is a little incredible because the soils of these two places are so different. This is the interest of our estate: to offer a great geological diversity in such a small area. This is why Saint Cosme must be approached as a Burgundian domain. When the "dentelles de Montmirail" (laces of Montmirail) pushed, cut and "verticalised" the geological mille-feuille composed of alternating limestone and marl, they generated our terroir and its originality. Then the calcareous marls descended into our valley (in geological terms, the "alluvial cone") and took the same route as the flow of cold air that today regulates the microclimate of this place. It is surprising to imagine that mineral can meander parallel to a flow of air, at a different pace and at different times. But what I like most about it is the poetic and graphic dimension of the parallel. All this refers us to the rules that order the universe. I have sometimes explained to you that Le Claux is the most Burgundian of our localities. This is even more telling in a year of freshness like 2014: if you detect aromas of Morey-Saint-Denis in Le Claux this year, don't be surprised, it's completely normal! But the mouth will still remind you that this is not exactly a birth under the same skies. At the back of the aptly named Clos de la Roche is a limestone quarry. This explains that. Le Claux may be our best wine in 2014... Small wild cherry, wild strawberry, violet, peat. Bottled without filtration.
