Gigondas 2018 - L'Argnée Vieilles Vignes - Famille Perrin
(94 - 96)/100 Parker
Maturity: 2020 - 2035
Comment by Joe Czerwinski on August 30, 2019: "Coming from a parcel of sand planted with Grenache in the 19th century, the Gigondas L'Argnee Vieilles Vignes 2018 offers an amazing bouquet of dusty cherries and dried flowers. This full-bodied wine has what appears to be a crystalline structure and purity, but is silky to the touch and finishes long and firm. I'm sure it will age well for at least a decade.
Less than a hectare of vines that are about 100 years old, that's where this wine with its exceptional aromas comes from.
The 2018 vintage: It is characterized by exceptional climatic conditions. The flowering takes place in the best conditions, with a historically abundant output of grapes. A few rainy episodes at the end of spring complicate things a little with an attack of mildew, but the fine weather then settles in until the harvest, which takes place in idyllic conditions. The wines look magnificent.
DESCRIPTION : Small plot of less than one hectare of pre-phylloxera vines (about 100 years old). Yields are low as production is limited to 1,500 bottles/year.
SITUATION: In the South-West of the appellation, in the heart of the historic Gigondas vineyard.
TERROIR: Sandy soil.
ELABORATION : Harvesting is manual. On arrival in the cellar, the grapes are sorted and vatted in 50hl truncated cone vats. The Grenaches are destemmed unlike the Syrahs. After a maceration phase, fermentation begins. Extraction and temperature are controlled according to the daily tasting. We work the vats by punching of the cap or pumping over. The vatting continues beyond the fermentation. After devatting, the wines are aged for a year and a half in tuns.
