Wines of Saint Emilion
The Grand Corbin Despagne vineyard is located near the border of Pomelo. It is one of the 7 estates sharing the name of Corbin. The Château is classified Grand Cru in 2006.
What are the specificities of Château Grand Corbin Despagne?
The Château Grand Corbin Despagne has been in the hands of the Despagne family for over two centuries! This is quite rare nowadays in the Bordeaux region. The Château Grand Corbin Despagne was bought in 1812 by the ancestors of the present Despagne family.
Before 1812, the Despagne family was well involved in the Bordeaux wine trade. They worked as farmers at Cheval Blanc. After the French Revolution, the Despagne family obtained the right to buy vineyard land.
The estate of origin of the Château Grand Corbin Despagne was much smaller than it is today. At the time, the Rive Droite estate was only 6.8 hectares compared to 29 hectares today. Today, the Château Grand Corbin Despagne is run by François Despagne, the 7th generation of his family to take over the property.
The Château Grand Corbin offers in tasting a wine composed of 3 grape varieties:
Over the years, the Malbec that used to be planted here has been completely removed.
The vineyard can be divided into 53 separate plots. The terroir is composed of sand, clay, sandy clay, sandstone and iron pieces in the soil. Their best terroir is the one closest to the Pomerol appellation with a higher proportion of clay in the soil.
The vines are almost 40 years old. However, they have a small selection of vines that are approaching 100 years old.
Since 2004, the estate has opted for organic farming techniques in order to respect its vines as well as the environment.
The vinification of the Grand Vin is carried out in temperature-controlled stainless steel vats. The wine is aged in 50% new French oak barrels for an average of 15 months, which may vary according to the vintage.
François Despagne's passionate efforts have enabled progress and regularity, as evidenced by the ranking as Grand Cru obtained in 2006.
The estate also produces a second wine, Petit Corbin Despagne.
